Circular acoustic confort as a Service
How might we boost circularity in acoustic comfort products?
ABSOTEC is a company that produces and markets acoustic solutions such as booths, islands, and dividers. From its factory in Valladolid, it supplies products to offices, educational centers, event spaces, and trade fairs such as IFEMA, among many others.
How could we redesign their offering to make it truly circular and improve its environmental impact?
Acoustic comfort as a Service
Our collaboration began with an initial analysis of the company’s portfolio and value chain, including its clients. We identified servitization (shifting from selling products to offering them as a service) as a viable and desirable strategy to improve impact. We designed a project to submit to a public call in Valladolid, which was approved and set the execution phase in motion.
The project included the development of the new service and a comparative environmental impact assessment. To shape ABSOTEC’s new servitised business lines, we identified the most strategic stakeholders (specifiers, clients and potential clients, suppliers, company employees, experts from entities such as clusters and others…) and facilitated co-creation dynamics.
Product-level innovation was also essential. We redesigned the acoustic solutions (islands, panels and booths) from a strategic ecodesign perspective. To ensure the products fitted within the new servitisation framework – whereby they would be constantly reused – certain adjustments were required. For instance, we redesigned the joining system between the textile and the structure of upholstered solutions, making it easier to re-upholster once the product returned to the company.
In this way – redesigning from the business model through to the product – we were able to improve several impact areas. One of these was CO₂ emissions: depending on the model, the new servitisation strategy enabled us to reduce emissions by between 57% and 80%. Another key impact relates to accessibility and the financial balance for ABSOTEC’s clients: thanks to servitisation, they can enjoy acoustic comfort without such a large initial outlay.
We worked with ABSOTEC on the narrative for the new business line. We designed various communication materials, such as the dossier and the landing page. The narrative was based on environmental and economic impact data, of course; but it was also crafted with the customer in mind – someone seeking to contribute to sustainability in a flexible way, without compromising comfort.
That’s how EVERMUTE by ABSOTEC was born.
